Although Arabian horses are my passion and inspiration, I enjoy drawing all sorts of animated subjects. If you are interested in having a portrait done, here are some things to consider.
Photography
A clear, crisp photo is required in order to draw a portrait. The larger the photo, the more detail can be drawn from it. The better the photo, the better the drawing! You may send me a photo that you already have or request that I come to see your horse and take my own photographs. Of course, any photos that you provide for the artwork will be returned to you. If you have a photo that you like but you're not sure if it can be used, feel free to email it to me for discussion. These photos are my only reference for the appearance and personality of your subject. Make sure the photo is a good representation of how you see them; the subject's expression and appearance will be immortalized in this work!
Subjects and Size Prices are determined by the number of subjects in the portrait and the size of the finished piece. For instance, one horse is one subject. A horse and a dog together are two subjects. You and your horse together are also two subjects. Each subject requires a certain amount of time and attention, and so the more subjects in the picture, the more time-consuming the drawing will be.
Also, larger drawings require more detail. The source photo needs to be as clear as possible or high resolution (if digital) in order to do a large drawing. The photo used for the drawing will often determine how large the drawing can be, but also consider where you will hang the finished piece. Will it fill the wall space nicely?
Pricing
Again, the final quote for the work will ultimately depend upon the issues discussed above. However, here is a general guide for most of my charcoal drawings:
Size Prices
10 x 13 one/two subject $350 / $400
14 x 17 one/two subject $450 / $500
18 x 24 one/two subject $700 / $850
For three or more subjects, please inquire so we can discuss what you have in mind. Additional costs may be associated with elaborate backgrounds, such as fences, landscapes, or buildings. Prices do not include matting, framing or shipping. I prefer to let the client exercise their own creative energies by choosing the frame that they like best for the environment into which the drawing will go.
Commission Agreements
There are really two customers with artwork - the artist and the client! We both have expectations for the piece. In order to protect both our interests, I require a commission agreement prior to the commencement of work. Close cooperation and communication between the artist and the purchaser helps ensure that each party's expectations are met.
A signed commission agreement, along with the 30% deposit, is required before commencement of work. Please read through the agreement and to see if it is agreeable to you. Write down any questions you have and we will review them together over the phone. We can discuss your photo choice, how it will be positioned on the paper, the general time frame that it will take to complete the commission and other particulars at that time.
After you are satisfied that all questions have been answered, mail the signed contract and the deposit. I will contact you by phone or e-mail at the receipt of the contract, sign and copy it, and mail you a copy for your records with a receipt for the deposit.
Methods of payment accepted are certified check or money order (US funds only) or PayPal.
The Finished Piece
Please note that you may commission or purchase my artwork for yourself or for someone else, and you are free to resell it. However, as the artist, I retain the copyright, which means that you cannot reproduce the work (photocopy or scan) in any way. All pieces are photographed upon completion and may be displayed in my web gallery as part of my portfolio of work. My best advertisement
is a satisfied client, and word of mouth recommendations are greatly
appreciated. Feel free to give out my name, website address, email
address and/or phone number to anyone who is interested in a portrait
or in seeing any of my other work. I would be happy to send you my
business cards or brochures.
If you are interested in an existing piece on the site, or would like to contact me about your ideas for a commissioned piece, please fill out the form below and I will contact you as soon as possible. Thank you!
